Shafali Verma’s Early Life and Family Background
The 22-year-old cricketer was born in Rohtak, Haryana. Her father, Sanjeev Verma, is a die-hard cricket fan who could not build a career in the sport and runs a jewellery shop by profession, while her mother, Parveen Bala, is a homemaker.
Apart from this, the cricketer has an elder brother, Sahil, and a younger sister, Nancy. Shafali, Sahil and Nancy all play cricket.
Verma completed her secondary and higher secondary education at St. Paul School and Mandeep Senior Secondary School in Rohtak, Haryana. Apart from this, the Indian opening batter earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sport from Swami Vivekanand Subharti University.
How Shafali Verma Started Her Cricket Journey
The Rohtak-born player started playing cricket when she was just eight years old. At the time, her elder brother Sahil and father used to take Verma for net practice.
Her then coach, Ashwani Kumar, a former Haryana first-class cricketer, revealed in an interview that Verma was very young when she came to him for training. She trained alongside girls who were six years older than her and also trained with under-14 boys.
Before starting her international cricket journey, Verma played for Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge. September 24, 2019, was the day when the fearless batter finally made her T20I debut for India against South Africa, becoming the youngest player in the squad.
After this, Verma also played against the West Indies in November 2019 and became the youngest player in women’s cricket to score a half-century.
In January 2020, the Haryana batter became part of the ICC Women’s squad and was awarded a central contract by the BCCI. In May 2021, Verma was also included in India’s Test and ODI squads.
Apart from this, the Delhi Capitals star was bought by the team for ₹2 crore in the inaugural WPL auction in 2023 and currently continues to represent the same team at ₹2.20 crore.
