Mr. Cricket has officially confirmed that his long-time colleague has sounded him out about becoming England’s next Test batting coach.
Speaking candidly on “Fox Cricket,” Hussey gave fans a clear window into what went down between the pair. Without dodging the uncomfortable question.
“This is what’s happened, right? I’ve worked with Steven Fleming for a long time. We’ve got a very good relationship at Chennai Super Kings,” Hussey said. “He’s now, you know, the red ball coach for England. He has inquired.
“He just said, ‘Look, Huss, would you be interested in being the batting coach?” I have I’m just taking some time. I’m not making any decisions anytime soon. Just thinking about it.“
It’s a massive call for the 51-year-old. Crossing boundary lines to coach England. Especially with a blockbuster Ashes series looming on the horizon. If the move happens, it would certainly raise eyebrows across Melbourne, Sydney, and beyond.
“We had just an off-the-cuff conversation. ‘What do you reckon?’ And I said, ‘Look, I’m not considering anything at the moment’,” Hussey added.
But this isn’t the first time. For Hussey to do it. Having previously served as a batting consultant during England’s triumphant 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign down under.
The actual price? Life away from the square and family commitments. Balancing a grueling international calendar might be hard. However, it’s Hussey’s decision and he’s the wanted man right now. Whether he decides to join Fleming’s red-ball revolution or pass on the opportunity remains to be seen.
