What Did Michael Vaughan Say About the Brydon Carse Situation?
Carse was celebrating Durham’s commanding County Championship win over Derbyshire, where the side skittled their opponents for just 84. But celebrating a win is one thing and getting into trouble in another. But who is to blame?
Vaughan, speaking on “The Overlap Cricket,” pointed out that certain characters in a dressing room need tighter management.
“My concern with Brydon Carse, I’ve heard his name mentioned a lot of times now. I heard it mentioned so many times in the winter,” Vaughan said. “And by the way, he bowled all right, but it wasn’t for his bowling, it wasn’t for his batting.
“Now, if he’s that kind of character, you know, the team that he’s playing for must understand that he needs looking after.”
This incident hasn’t happened in a vacuum. 8 centrally contracted England players have attracted headlines for late-night antics. That too in the past 9 months.
From high-profile nights out during the winter Ashes tour to recent curfews being broken, the ECB is facing a recurring cultural headache.
“Celebrate a win. No problem with celebrating. But when you’ve got an individual player that you know is a little bit,” Vaughan added. “He’s likely to do something, or he’s a bit loose.
“Yeah, loose is a word. I think it’s down to the team to understand that you just can’t allow him to do that.”
Carse has since been replaced in the Test squad by Sonny Baker. Missing out on the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.
Whether Carse ultimately bears the brunt for a wider cultural issue remains to be seen, but Vaughan’s stance is crystal clear. Team management has to step in.
