Recent insider reports reveal that the veteran India batter was left fuming after a selection committee member dropped a bombshell during the tour of England.
A selector reportedly approached the former captain to ask whether he’d consider calling it a day on his ODI career following the fixture at Lord’s. The message was clear. Young blood over experience.
Sources close to the team indicated that Rohit was understandably angry about the abrupt directive. Then came the Lord’s 138 knock. The speculations took a back seat. The fans rejoiced.
But the backroom drama continues. Top board officials have publicly backed the veteran cricketer. Hinting that he remains very much in the scheme of things. But the selection committee’s rogue ultimatum has put heavy pressure on the leadership.

Jonty Rhodes recently said, “You have got to remember that having experience at a World Cup is another factor that we don’t factor in, so having someone like Rohit Sharma in your squad is such an asset at a World Cup.”
The question is simple. Do you back Sharma, a man with character, the glue in the locker room, and a proven opener who steps up on the bigger stage? Or do you rely on young blood, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal?
One thing is sure. Sharma knows he has to silence the rumours with his bat; a series with the West Indies and New Zealand is next, and as long as runs keep on coming, his place is secured. But it shouldn’t come down to this, too.
