Things change quickly in cricket, and the ECB’s U-turn on Kevin Pietersen proves the same. Appointing him as a mentor to the Three Lions for the 2027 World Cup. Now, former Test skipper Alastair Cook has shared his opinion on the appointment.
What Did Alastair Cook Say About Kevin Pietersen’s New Role With England?
Cook, appearing on the “Stick To Cricket” podcast, offered a fascinating, measured assessment of his former teammate’s appointment, admitting that while the move adds layers of proven franchise expertise, the outcome remains a massive unknown.
“I suppose it (Kevin Pietersen being the perfect man). We’re going full circle a little bit with the coaching staff now. Brendon (McCullum), kind of, when he first came in, got rid of everyone and just wanted two or three people around, and now they seem to be adding a bit more experience,” Cook said.
“He (McCullum) will have a lot of experience. Well, he does have a lot of experience to be in the IPL. Yeah, I mean, I’m not adverse to him, like doing anything,” Cook added.
Pietersen certainly doesn’t lack experience. Particularly when navigating the high-pressure ecosystem of the IPL, where he previously served as a mentor for the Delhi Capitals.
But what else does Pietersen bring to the table? Pietersen’s blueprint has always diverged sharply from conventional orthodox coaching. Having played 104 Tests and revolutionised modern batting.
“He (Kevin Pietersen) did think differently, didn’t he? To a lot of players, didn’t he? I think as a sounding board I think he will be quite valuable to that side in terms of his role,” Cook added.
But there was a subtle warning too. “How good he’ll be at it? No one really knows,” Cook concluded.
England have their work cut out. With a series against Sri Lanka and a litmus test against Australia and South Africa coming up.
