The Ashes is still a year away, but the heat is already increasing. Not of rivalry, but fury. At the heart of the storm is a staggering 43% price hike for seats in Edgbaston’s iconic Hollies Stand. Now, Michael Vaughan has doubled down on his scathing opinion.
What Did Michael Vaughan Say About ECB’s Ashes Decision?
Vaughan, speaking on the “Stick to Cricket” podcast, didn’t hold back, tearing into the ECB and host venues for exploiting the demand and treating loyal supporters like cash cows.
Reason for the rant? As per the 2027 Ashes Ballot, Hollies Stand’s tickets have shot up from £115 during the 2023 series to a whopping £165, plus a £2.50 booking fee.
“We know that the demand for an Ashes series is huge, but my problem, it is that this ECB have stipulated over the last few years they want cricket to be the most inclusive sport in the country,” Vaughan pointed out.
“So, there’s no men’s test match up north next year. So, how is that inclusive to the whole country?”
The numbers certainly paint a grim picture for families. A family outing scaling past £1,000 once you factor in travel, food, and accommodation. Everyday supporters are facing an impossible squeeze.
Vaughan’s further argument? Administrators completely misreading the room, relying too heavily on the assumption that die-hard fans will always pay whatever it takes.
Instead, he’s issued a blunt warning about the dangers of alienating the grassroots base. Fans might just throw their hands up and switch off.
“I know the Ashes will be full, but don’t rip off the fans. No, don’t take the p_ss out of the fans. Don’t take it for granted. Don’t take the p_ss out of them,” Vaughan said.
“Because you know what? The years after they might just go, ‘You know what? Nah, no thanks.’ Watching it on television’s great these days, so stay at home and watch it on.”
Then what’s the rationale behind such a move? Venues might defend the spikes by citing inflation and soaring operational overheads. But Vaughan’s fiery critique strikes a massive chord.
