When he’s not busy breaking batting records or anchoring the England Test innings, Joe Root is usually off the pitch trading the scoreboard for family life. Sure, we’ve all seen him raise his bat after another masterclass. But what goes on behind closed doors? Let’s take a proper look.

Meeting Joe Root’s Wife, Carrie Cotterell

Root met his wife, Carrie Cotterell, back in 2014 when she was working in hospitality at The Arc bar in Headingley, Leeds. Sparks flew.

They kept things relatively quiet before stepping out together publicly. And after a couple of years of dating, Joe popped the question in 2016.

By December 2018, the pair tied the knot in a traditional, intimate Christian ceremony in Sheffield. Surrounded by close family and friends. Carrie later balanced corporate roles, including working as a territory manager for Ethicon Biosurgery, alongside managing family life.

Joe Root’s Family and Children

Root and Carrie share two children. Their eldest, a son named Alfred William, was born in January 2017, just ahead of an Ashes tour. A few years later, in July 2020, the family welcomed a baby girl named Isabella.

When Isabella was born, he famously missed a Test match against the West Indies to be at home with Carrie. Proving that some things simply matter more than cricket.

Joe Root’s Early Life and Background: Growing Up in Yorkshire

Born in Sheffield in December 1990 to parents Matt and Helen, Joe grew up alongside his younger brother, Billy. Billy carved out a professional cricket career of his own, currently playing for Glamorgan.

Long before piling up over 14,000 Test runs and captaining his country, Joe was just a cricket-obsessed lad honing his craft at Dore Primary. Later on, a sports scholarship at Worksop College.

His parents drove him up and down the country for matches. Laying the groundwork for the resilience we see at the crease today.

Root remains a family man at heart. Whether he’s playing Lego with the kids or walking out to face the new ball. That balance keeps him grounded.
