Team India’s transition phase in red-ball cricket has hit a significant roadblock. Promising left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan has been officially ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Sai Sudharsan Injury Breakdown: What Went Wrong?
Sudharsan’s troubles stem from a big toe injury sustained during the India A tour of Sri Lanka last month. While playing the second unofficial ‘A’ Test match, the Tamil Nadu batter took a severe blow on his foot.
Despite the initial concern, selectors initially named him in the senior Test squad, subject to fitness clearance. He stayed back in India to undergo rigorous rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. While he managed light batting and fielding drills, medical evaluations revealed that his body required further biological healing.
Consequently, he did not board the flight to Colombo with the rest of the squad.
Availability and Sai Sudharsan‘s Potential Replacement in Devdutt Padikkal
With the first Test set to kick off in Galle on August 15, India is forced to reshuffle its playing combination. In Sudharsan’s absence, Devdutt Padikkal is the frontrunner to slot in at number three, having strengthened his case with a fluent century in the three-day warm-up fixture against the Sri Lanka XI.
Meanwhile, the selection committee is deliberating on a formal replacement to back up the squad, with names like Sarfaraz Khan making the rounds. For Sudharsan, the focus shifts entirely back to Bengaluru for strength and conditioning.
Sudharsan’s absence leaves a gaping hole in the top order, particularly given his red-hot form on the very same soil just weeks prior. During the India A shadow tour, Sudharsan was in sublime touch, registering scores of 132, 7, 168, and 25 across innings, proving his adaptability to sub-continental turning tracks.
Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir had heavily backed Sudharsan to cement the number three spot. But if Padikkal plunders runs, then it will become an interesting competition for the slot.
